Right then, I've seen the new movie, the now correctly named Charlie & the Chocolate Factory. I really enjoyed it, Johnny Depp was brilliant, the kid who plays Charlie was excellent although a bit underused IMO. The bits about Willy Wonka's childhood were interesting, although probably not needed. I'd have like to have seen more background on the other kids, they didn't have the personality of those in the 1971 film, probably cos it wasn't as much of a musical. Mike Teavee was even more annoying than the original! The Oompa Loompas were excellent, all played by one guy and CGI'ed to the max! The songs were taken from the book, and were really catchy, but still not quite as good as the original songs.
So which do people prefer? I really can't decide!

Having said that, not Johnny Depp's finest moment IMHO - too many jacko undertones, but was liking the whole "pete townsend / darkness / beatles psychadelia" moment near the end with the oompa-loompas.

the wonkas
i reckon the two shouldn't be compared. depp as wonka was totally different from the orginal wonka - we saw more of a dark, sometimes sleazy side.I loved the narration and the oompa loompas - oh my goodness they still sing!!!!!!! was sooo excited by that. I agree that charlie wasn't used to his full potential - but the bucket family were fabulous - reeeally dont like helen bonham carter - but she fitted her role perfectly.all in all it was a brillint film - but different enough from the originaly to mean that i want to own them both on dvd.
